Barrett A. Toan
Barrett A. Toan is the former Chairman and President and CEO of Express Scripts
(Nasdaq: ESRX), one of the nation.s largest pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). Express
Scripts provides prescription drug services to over 50 million members, including
managed care organizations, insurance companies, employers, public sector and union-sponsored
benefit plans.
As President and CEO, Toan led the Express Scripts. initial public offering (IPO),
deployed innovative cost-savings and patient safety programs, and grew the Company
into a Fortune 500 firm. Express Scripts currently processes 400 million retail
prescriptions and 50 million mail order prescriptions each year. The Company generates
revenues in excess of $15 billion per year.
Prior to joining Express Scripts, Toan was the COO and Executive Director of Sanus
Corps Health Systems Inc. (later GenCare), a leading health maintenance organization.
Before joining Sanus, Toan served in the public sector in a variety of roles, including
the Director of Missouri's Department of Social Services.
Toan has served on the board of directors of U.S. Cellular, Olin School of Business,
Missouri Historical Society, and Kenyon College. His numerous awards include being
named Inc Magazine's Entrepreneur of the Year. Toan holds a master's degree from
the University of Pennsylvania's The Wharton School of Finance and Commerce and
a bachelor's degree from Kenyon College.
