David Kates
Senior Vice President, Business and Product Strategy
David Kates is responsible for defining the strategic direction
for development of Prematics' products and services. He brings to Prematics
a wealth of experience in successful management of health information technology
businesses.
Prior to joining Prematics, Mr. Kates served as the chief operating officer
of Hx Technologies (HxTI), a technology-enabled healthcare services company that
partners with payers, providers and patients to improve the quality, safety and
cost of care by enabling the seamless and secure flow of clinical data between healthcare
organizations. In this position, he was responsible for all aspects of product
management and service delivery including managing relationships with provider organizations,
systems integrators and vendor partners.
Prior to Hx Technologies, Mr. Kates was vice president of clinical product management
at WebMD, now Sage Software. While at WebMD, he led an effort to reposition
the company's practice management service to include electronic health record systems;
established a clinical transaction network to include electronic prescribing, clinical
laboratory, and administrative transactions; and, expanded the company's product
line to include patient portal and interoperability through third party relationships.
Mr. Kates' efforts contributed to substantial growth in the company's revenue.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Kates was vice president and managing director for the
Cerner Corporation where he developed the company's ambulatory EMR business unit into
a $12 million systems integration and professional services organization.
In addition, he led the company's activities in Community Health Information Networks
(CHINs), a precursor to Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIOs).
His experience also includes the development of medical devices for Hewlett-Packard
and systems integration and networking at IBM.
Mr. Kates is an active contributor to government and industry led health information
technology initiatives. He currently serves as co-chair for the Certification
Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT), a member of the Health Information
Technology Standards Panel (HITSP), and is a past board member of HL7. He
has served in leadership positions within the Health Information and Management
Systems Society (HIMSS), American Health Information Community (AHIC), and the national
eHealth Initiative. Mr. Kates has also authored several publications on health
information technology.
Mr. Kates received his Bachelors and Masters of Science in electrical engineering
and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his MBA
from the Duke University Fuqua School of Business.
