Bethesda (MD), July 11, 2006 — Prematics™ today announced that Barrett Toan, one of the nation's foremost executives in the pharmacy benefit management (PBM) industry, has joined the Company's Executive Council. Toan's fellow Council members include former Health & Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, Senator John Breaux (ret.), and Frank Newman, former Chairman and CEO of Eckerd Corporation. Prematics has developed and is delivering ScriptToneSM, a new, easy-to-use electronic prescribing solution that promises to transform the $250 billion prescription drug supply chain.
"I am honored to have Barrett as a member of Prematics' Executive Council," said James Bradley, Prematics Chairman of the Board. "As one of the country's leading PBM executives, Barrett has a deep understanding of the industry's value chain, as well as the public policy impact of new prescription drug reforms. This expertise will be invaluable to Prematics as we deploy ScriptToneSM across the country."
"I have spent my career advocating for change in the health care industry and finding new and more efficient ways to deliver prescription drug benefits to consumers," said Toan. "My work with Prematics is a logical extension of those efforts. Prematics' easy-to-use solution and innovative business model have the potential to revolutionize how consumers receive and fulfill their prescriptions. I am very excited to help the Prematics executive management team finally make electronic prescribing a wide-spread reality."
Toan is the former Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Express Scripts (Nasdaq: ESRX), one of the nation's largest pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). Express Scripts provides prescription drug services to over 50 million members, including managed care organizations, insurance companies, employers, public sector and union-sponsored benefit plans.
As CEO, Toan led the Express Scripts' initial public offering (IPO), deployed innovative cost-savings and patient safety programs, and grew the Company into a Fortune 500 firm with more than $15 billion in annual revenue. Express Scripts currently processes 400 million retail prescriptions and 50 million mail order prescriptions each year.
Prior to joining Express Scripts, Toan was the COO and Executive Director of Sanus Corps Health Systems Inc. (later GenCare), a leading health maintenance organization. Before joining Sanus, Toan served in the public sector in a variety of roles, including the Director of Missouri's Department of Social Services.
Toan has served on the board of directors of U.S. Cellular, Olin School of Business, Missouri Historical Society, and Kenyon College. His numerous awards include being named Inc. Magazine's Entrepreneur of the Year. Toan holds a master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania's The Wharton School of Finance and Commerce and a bachelor's degree from Kenyon College.
